Finding out about your ancestors and where you are from can be a fascinating, and sometimes surprising, process. And putting that information into a family tree is a satisfying achievement and a precious gift to leave to your descendents.
If you’ve already started that process, then you will probably be able to vouch for the above thoughts. If you haven’t started, it may look like a daunting process with so many potential sources of information: the internet (naturally nowadays), local archives dotted all round the country, national organisations like the Scottish Registry Office in Edinburgh or its digital version, ScotlandsPeople and best and easiest of all, those old papers and certificates that have accumulated in the attic.
Dunbartonshire Family History Society meets regularly throughout Autumn to Spring in Westerton Library Hall. Members range from the very experienced, who have spent many years researching their family trees and accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise, to the complete beginners, who are looking for help on how to proceed.
Like all family history enthusiasts our interests are very wide ranging. Like all family historians our ancestors come from all over the world, not merely limited to Dunbartonshire.
Whether you are a beginner or more experienced, the Society is a great place to share your experience with others or to benefit from their knowledge. If you’ve got a problem that you are stuck at (or a “brick wall” as it’s usually called) then there’s usually someone who has already climbed over and will give you a leg up, or who can suggest things that you can try to find a way round it.
However, since we are an interest-sharing group, we are not an organisation that is resourced to carry out general or specific family history research for non-members.
The “Meetings” tab at the top of the page will tell you about the different kinds of meetings and events held by the Society.
The “Latest News” tab gives additional details of the next meeting or event and information on future activities where a booking is required.
The “Programme” tab details the individual events of this session.
The “Committee” tab lists the current members of the Committee of the Society.
The “Contacts” tab provides the details of the Secretary of the Society, a link to send the Secretary an email and with a link to a downloadable Application Form to join the Society.
